The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has cleared 21 battery energy storage system (BESS) projects for system impact studies (SIS) with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in May. The projects represent a combined 3,494.786 MW of capacity and 1,108.448 MWh of BESS power.
Among the largest is Visayas Cleanergy Inc.’s 416.102 MW solar facility in Cadiz, Negros Occidental, paired with a 390.254 MWh BESS. Mainstream Renewable Power Philippines Corp. follows with a 375 MW wind project in Mindoro, and Northern Sun Power Inc. with a 351.436 MW solar farm in Ilocos Norte, paired with 337 MWh of storage.
All approved projects use renewable technologies or BESS, with ten focused on wind, four on solar plus storage, three as standalone BESS, three hydro, and one standalone solar project.
While SIS approval is a key milestone, these projects are not guaranteed to proceed, pending funding, transmission access, and offtake agreements.
