Filinvest sugar mill hits historic 1MT milestone

Filinvest Group’s Cotabato Sugar Central Co., Inc. has achieved a historic breakthrough, processing over one million metric tons of sugarcane this milling season—the first time in more than two decades and 42% above target.

The record-setting performance underscores the success of long-term modernization efforts since Filinvest acquired the facility in 2002.

Cotabato Sugar, located in Brgy. Kilada, Matalam, North Cotabato, was originally established in 1978. It serves sugarcane planters across North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Maguindanao. The mill previously faced operational setbacks, closing in 1986 and again in 2000, before the Gotianun-led Filinvest Group took over and resumed operations in 2003.

“This is more than just a number,” said Juan Eugenio Roxas, President and CEO of Cotabato Sugar. “It’s a symbol of perseverance, transformation, and teamwork. It affirms our drive for operational excellence and long-term sustainability.”

The milestone was achieved through aggressive improvements in both equipment and processes. Notable upgrades include advanced mill rollers, imbibition automation, and online instrumentation for real-time monitoring of key performance indicators. Operational audits and targeted interventions also optimized output and cut downtime significantly.

“Reducing factory downtime played a key role in restoring planter confidence,” Roxas added. “It allowed us to strengthen relationships with our partners and improve overall plant efficiency.”

The improved capacity not only increased daily throughput but also deepened collaboration among plant workers, engineers, and field staff.

Roxas stressed the collective effort behind the success: “Our people’s commitment and teamwork made all the difference.”

As Filinvest marks its 70th anniversary this year, Roxas said Cotabato Sugar’s achievement reflects the company’s core values of customer centricity, continuous improvement, and inclusive growth.

The group continues to invest in sustainable and regionally inclusive ventures, positioning Cotabato Sugar as a catalyst for rural development and agro-industrial resilience in Mindanao.
