Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. has lifted the import ban on poultry and related products from Brazil, following confirmation that the country is now free of avian influenza.
The ban, originally imposed on May 19 due to an outbreak, was revoked through Memorandum Order No. 35 after Brazilian authorities reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) that the outbreak had been resolved, with no new cases since June 18.
The Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Bureau of Animal Industry, assessed the risk of contamination as “negligible,” citing WOAH guidelines.
The move aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to diversify agricultural import sources. As Brazil accounts for about a third of global poultry exports, the resumption is expected to bolster national food security by reducing dependence on limited suppliers.
The policy shift takes effect immediately and remains valid until further notice.
