Student lane, fare cuts in metro rail lines

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has launched dedicated lanes for students at all MRT-3 and LRT-2 stations. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the daily travel experience for students who are now entitled to a 50 percent fare discount on rail lines.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the importance of improving passenger flow, particularly for students seeking discounted fares. “President Bongbong Marcos has instructed us to make the lives of commuters easier,” Dizon said. “We must ensure there are no long queues and that students can pass through quickly so they aren’t late for school.”

To further support this mandate, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), operator of the LRT-1 line, will implement additional queuing systems to manage crowds and minimize delays for student passengers.

The initiative follows a directive issued on June 20, under President Marcos’ instruction, mandating all three major rail lines—MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2—to increase student fare discounts from 20 percent to 50 percent, effective until 2028.

The MRT-3 services the busy North Avenue to Taft corridor, while LRT-2 connects Recto in Manila to Antipolo across 13 stations, facilitating vital east-west travel across Metro Manila. These dedicated student lanes aim to ensure smoother transitions and promote equitable access to education through reliable, affordable transport.

This effort underscores the administration’s commitment to commuter welfare and inclusive mobility, signaling a shift toward more responsive, policy-driven transport management.
