Engtek transitions Calamba plant to 100% hydro from First Gen

Engtek Group has expanded its renewable energy (RE) partnership with First Gen Corp., the country’s leading RE producer, as part of its decarbonization strategy. This development sees Engtek’s second Philippine manufacturing facility, Asaba Manufacturing Philippines, Inc., transition entirely to hydroelectric power supplied by First Gen, marking a significant step toward the company’s 45 percent GHG emissions reduction target by 2030.

The power supply agreement, formalized in November 2024, enables Asaba’s Calamba, Laguna facility to shift from coal-based electricity to clean hydro sourced from First Gen’s Pantabangan and Casecnan plants. This is made possible through the country’s Retail Competition and Open Access framework.

“This shift allows us to significantly lower our environmental impact while improving operational cost efficiency,” said Motohiro Asaba, president of Engtek Philippines.

This marks the third RE collaboration between the two firms since 2022, following geothermal supply for Engtek’s first Philippine facility and a solar installation in 2023. The partnership underscores Engtek’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing across Southeast Asia.

First Gen’s Carlo Vega, chief engagement officer, acknowledged the strengthened relationship: “We are pleased to support Engtek in its sustainability journey. First Gen’s goal is to enable our partners to decarbonize without sacrificing operational reliability or efficiency.”

A ceremonial Renewable Energy Plaque was awarded to Engtek on 20 June this year, symbolizing the formal transition and shared climate commitment.

This strategic partnership highlights the growing role of clean energy in industrial operations and reinforces both companies’ leadership in sustainable practices within the region.
