Space tech to aid power delivery in remote PH areas

The National Power Corp. (NPC) has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) to harness space technology for managing and monitoring off-grid power systems across the country.

Announced Wednesday, the partnership focuses on using PhilSA’s space science and technology applications to support NPC’s operations, particularly in pre-construction assessments, post-disaster recovery, and monitoring of dams and watersheds. These functions are critical to improving the performance and sustainability of NPC’s Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG), which oversees 274 power plants in 238 off-grid locations across 34 provinces.

NPC president and CEO Fernando Martin Roxas emphasized the complementary nature of the two agencies: “PhilSA is a high-tech agency… while NPC is a mission-driven organization devoted to electrification of geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.”

The collaboration aligns with national energy policy goals to extend reliable power to underserved regions while integrating advanced monitoring and environmental management capabilities through space-based tools.
