Aboitiz Power to build 30-MW battery storage system in Mactan ecozone

Aboitiz Power Corp. subsidiary East Asia Utilities Corp. (EAUC) is set to develop a 30-megawatt hybrid battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Mactan Economic Zone, targeting completion by the first half of 2026.

Designed to enhance power reliability in Central Visayas, the project is among the first large-scale energy storage facilities in the region. It will serve both as a backup power source and a grid-stabilizing asset, storing surplus energy and releasing it during peak demand.

Aldo Ramos, Aboitiz Power COO for operated assets, emphasized the system’s role in providing real-time grid balancing and faster response to fluctuations. The BESS will complement EAUC’s existing generation assets, boosting operational flexibility and energy security.

Approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) earlier this year, the hybrid BESS is also seen as a critical infrastructure investment supporting commercial resilience and attracting locators to the ecozone. “Investors heavily consider the reliability of power supply,” noted PEZA director general Tereso Panga, underscoring the project’s value in strengthening business confidence.

Part of Aboitiz Power’s broader energy transition strategy, the project aligns with the group’s plan to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 4,600 MW by 2030, within a balanced total capacity target of 9,200 MW. The firm has earmarked ₱78.1 billion in capital expenditures for 2025 to support this initiative.
