Gov’t wipes out 11-year motorcycle plate backlog, tightens crackdown on fakes

The government on Tuesday reported clearing the 11-year backlog of motorcycle license plates, a long-standing issue dating back to 2014. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that 5.4 million plates have now been produced and are being distributed nationwide, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to expedite the process through the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

“This year, we have now produced 5.4 million MC plates, which effectively eliminates the backlog,” said Dizon, attributing the resolution to the Marcos administration’s push for reform.

To aid motorists, the LTO launched ltotracker.com, also accessible via the eGovPH app, allowing users to check plate delivery or pickup status.

Meanwhile, Dizon warned against the proliferation of fake license plates, following a joint operation by the PNP-CIDG and LTO that led to the arrest of four individuals in Bulacan and the seizure of illegal printing equipment. Dizon emphasized that official LTO plates contain QR code security features, making counterfeits distinguishable.

The transport chief thanked Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and PNP chief Nicolas Torre for their assistance in the crackdown.
