The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has identified 8,170 barangays nationwide as prone to rain-induced landslides and flooding due to Tropical Depression Crising, expected to affect the country from 16 to 19 July.
In its geohazards threat advisory released Wednesday, MGB said that 1,403 barangays (17.2 percent) are in the National Capital Region, including areas in Manila, Quezon City, Pasig, Marikina, and Taguig, among others.
At-risk areas span across Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, covering provinces such as Cagayan, Camarines Sur, Benguet, Leyte, Cotabato, and Zamboanga del Sur, underscoring the widespread exposure to geohazards.
MGB urged both local and national governments to heighten disaster preparedness, and warned residents in low-lying areas and near dams or rivers to stay alert for sudden flooding and debris flow.
The bureau also advised mining firms to activate emergency teams and coordinate closely with authorities to mitigate risks.
The geohazard mapping reinforces the need for localized disaster risk reduction plans and early warning systems, especially as extreme weather events become more frequent due to climate change.
