DigiPlus urges caution on total online gaming ban, citing policy risks

DigiPlus Interactive Corp. on Thursday cautioned lawmakers against implementing a total ban on online gaming, warning that such could drive users toward unregulated black markets and undermine consumer protection, job security, and government revenue.

Citing global trends, DigiPlus chairman Eusebio Tanco said prohibition does not eliminate demand and only pushes activity underground, where there is “no oversight, no taxes, and no accountability.” Instead, DigiPlus advocates for strengthened regulation as the more effective approach to ensuring player safety and market transparency.

“We believe regulation is the path to player protection. It’s the only way to safeguard players, preserve jobs, and close the door on illegal, underground platforms,” Tanco said.

DigiPlus emphasized that a well-regulated industry could sustain over 40,000 jobs across multiple sectors and generate billions in government revenue. The company also noted that many of the player safeguards being proposed by lawmakers are already in place across its platforms, including strict KYC protocols, age gating, and responsible gaming tools introduced as early as November 2024.

New measures are being rolled out, including affordability checks, behavioral nudges, and referrals to mental health professionals, alongside the launch of in-app community features to promote peer support and responsible gaming.

In a broader policy context, DigiPlus stressed its support for updated legislation, including tougher penalties for illegal operators and clearer advertising standards. Its internal marketing policies now prohibit content targeting minors, promoting urgency or wealth, or encouraging risky behavior.

“These initiatives are part of a long-term strategy—not a reaction to pressure,” the company said, adding that its investments in compliance, data science, and player support reflect a commitment to building a trustworthy gaming ecosystem.

“With the right rules in place, the Philippines can be a model for safe, transparent online gaming in Asia,” said Tanco, affirming the firm’s readiness to collaborate with regulators and civil society.
