Globe plugs in to Asia’s AI-ready subsea superhighway

Globe Telecom has joined the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable consortium, a strategic move aimed at enhancing East Asia’s high-capacity digital infrastructure amid surging demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and data-intensive technologies.

The 8,900-kilometer AUG East system—linking Singapore and Japan with landing points in the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan—is designed to support growing enterprise needs across the region. Built with high optical fiber count, it will deliver massive bandwidth and network resilience, critical for AI-powered applications and global-scale connectivity.

Slated for completion by Q3 2029, AUG East will significantly reinforce network diversity and reliability, offering an essential buffer during natural disasters and surging data use.

Globe’s participation underscores its long-term commitment to digital infrastructure development in the Philippines. “This investment in the AUG East cable system is a cornerstone of our long-term strategy to future-proof the Philippines’ digital infrastructure,” said Raymond Policarpio, VP and Head of Strategy Management and Business Investments at Globe.

Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz added, “This new data superhighway strengthens our nation’s digital backbone… enabling businesses to compete globally and embrace technologies that uplift lives and drive inclusive progress.”

The move positions Globe and the Philippines to capitalize on Asia-Pacific’s leadership in AI and digital infrastructure investments, with regional AI-driven traffic expected to surpass traditional usage by 2031.
