The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has identified 9,366 barangays nationwide as vulnerable to rain-induced landslides and flooding, as Tropical Depression Dante and the enhanced southwest monsoon continue to bring heavy rains. This comes just weeks after the country dealt with Tropical Cyclone Crising.
In its latest advisory, MGB flagged 1,403 barangays in Metro Manila, including areas in Quezon City, Manila, Makati, Taguig, and Marikina, among others, as at risk.
Luzon provinces with significant vulnerability include Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Benguet, Kalinga, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, and Batangas. Occidental Mindoro stands out, with 149 of its 164 barangays (90.85 percent) and 94.83 percent of its population (498,180 people) facing rainfall-related hazards.
In the Visayas, Antique province is forecast to experience the widest impact, with 90.59 percent of its population (555,267 people) expected to be affected.
MGB urged national and local authorities to stay alert for possible landslides, flash floods, and debris flow, especially in low-lying areas near rivers and dams. Residents are advised to monitor water levels and prepare for emergency conditions.
