P3.75B infrastructure damage prompts policy review

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Wednesday reported estimated ₱3.75 billion in damage to public infrastructures arising from the combined impact of the southwest monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong.

DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, citing a preliminary report from the Bureau of Maintenance, said the damage includes ₱3.25 billion in flood control structures, ₱483.69 million in national roads, and ₱24.48 million in national bridges. Affected areas span the Ilocos Region, Regions III, IV-B, VI, and the Negros Island Region.

Despite rapid response efforts that reopened 35 road sections, five remain impassable across CAR, Regions I, III, and IV-A due to soil collapse and flooding. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure and may prompt increased investment in climate-resilient systems under current public works policy.

DPWH continues to validate field reports while coordinating recovery efforts to ensure all routes are cleared for public use.
