Synergy Grid & Development Phils. Inc., the controlling stakeholder in the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), announced that independent director Atty. Francis Saturnino C. Juan has stepped down from its board following his appointment as the new Chairperson of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).
“His resignation is brought about by his appointment as Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), with the appointment taking effect on August 8,” the company said in a statement.
Juan’s resignation from Synergy Grid took effect on July 21. The company has yet to announce his replacement on the board.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Juan to head the ERC after Monalisa Dimalanta resigned, cutting short her seven-year term originally set to end in 2029. Industry stakeholders have welcomed Juan’s swift appointment, saying it ensures continued leadership at the energy sector’s chief regulatory body.
Two other commissioners of the five-member ERC have retired earlier this month. Their replacements have yet to be named.
Juan brings with him years of experience in the energy industry, including previous roles within regulatory agencies and legal advisory positions. His appointment is seen as a stabilizing move amid ongoing reforms and challenges in the power sector.
