Marikina anti-flood project gains global applause

Manila Water’s Project i-Float has gained international recognition for its impactful, low-cost engineering solution to urban flooding. Showcased at the 41st International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) World Congress and the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) Spotlight 2025, the initiative was presented by Riza Oiga, head of wastewater facilities operations, alongside collaborators Christian Quintos and Marvin Jambre.

The project, supported by Manila Water and backed by the Manila Water Foundation, uses floating bar screens to capture solid waste in creeks, reducing blockages and mitigating flood risk in densely populated areas like Marikina City. It has benefitted over 180,000 residents and improved wastewater treatment operations. Since its pilot, the initiative has reduced flood incidents and collected up to 24 cubic meters of waste monthly.

Recognized as a model of community-based innovation, Project i-Float also received support from the Angat Buhay NGO under its Women Champions in the Water Sector Program, underscoring its grassroots and gender-inclusive approach.

The international exposure affirms Manila Water’s corporate commitment to sustainable urban infrastructure and climate resilience. Expansion is underway to other flood-prone areas including Pasig, Taguig, and Navotas, with scalable and cost-efficient design adaptations.
