KONE invests in Filipino talent with new elevator & escalator academy

Global elevator and escalator leader KONE has launched its first KONE Academy in the Philippines, a dedicated training facility aimed at developing a highly skilled technical workforce to support the country’s urbanization and smart city development goals.

Located in Mandaluyong City, the Academy currently trains 620 elevator and escalator professionals annually, with plans to increase this to 800 trainees by 2027. By 2030, KONE aims to certify 4,400 professionals, directly contributing to the Philippines’ infrastructure capacity and aligning with national goals for sustainable and intelligent urban development.

The move holds strategic policy significance as the Philippines prepares for rapid urban growth, with 102 million residents projected to live in cities by 2050, and 70 percent of urban LGUs planning or piloting smart city programs, according to government data. The academy directly supports the country’s demand for future-ready infrastructure and skilled technical talent.

“This is not just a training center – it’s a launchpad for the Philippines’ smart city aspirations,” said Petteri Kyrklund, managing director of KONE Philippines. “We are equipping local talent to ensure safety, efficiency, and innovation in urban mobility.”

The KONE Academy forms part of the company’s broader talent development initiatives in the country, such as the Service Operations Apprenticeship Program and Delivery Operations Development Program, designed to build future leaders in operations and technical services.

Edward Loy, managing director of KONE Southeast Asia, noted the Academy’s role in the company’s regional “Rise” strategy (2025–2030), which focuses on digital innovation, modernization, and sustainability in infrastructure, anchored by a people-first approach.

Training at the Academy includes hands-on instruction in equipment installation, maintenance, and modernization, alongside real-world simulations and exposure to smart building technologies like API-enabled robotics, smart access systems, and connected elevators. The facility also doubles as a Customer Experience Center, showcasing innovations like KONE UltraRope® and 24/7 Connect for predictive maintenance.

With over 50 years in Southeast Asia, KONE’s investment in technical education underpins its commitment to being a long-term partner in the Philippines’ infrastructure and digital transformation journey.
