The Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defence Command declared martial law in eight districts across the two eastern provinces on Friday, effective immediately, The Nation, an English-language online newspaper, reported.
According to the report, the declaration was made to authorize the deployment of military forces in response to external threats. Cambodian forces have reportedly used weapons and force to encroach upon Thai territory along the border. Around 130,000 residents in the area are affected.
The command said the measure is essential to protect Thailand’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety and property of its citizens. Around 130,000 residents of the areas are affected by the conflict.
Martial law has now been extended to the following areas: in Chanthaburi province—Mueang Chanthaburi, Tha Mai, Makham, Laem Sing, Kaeng Hang Maew, Na Yai Am, and Khao Khitchakut districts; and in Trat province—Khao Saming district.
