Agri damage from typhoons, monsoon hits P3B

Damage to agriculture from the combined effects of Typhoons Crising, Dante, and Emong, along with the southwest monsoon (habagat), has reached ₱3 billion, according to a 31 July advisory from the Department of Agriculture (DA).

This marks an increase from previous estimate of ₱2.34 billion earlier in the week. The losses have impacted 93,070 farmers across 93,258 hectares, resulting in a volume loss of 74,280 metric tons.

The bulk of the losses came from:

    • Rice: ₱1.69 billion in damage over 87,802 hectares (55,521 MT lost)
    • High-value crops: ₱604.68 million (13,160 MT lost)
    • Fisheries: ₱516.57 million affecting 3,185 fisherfolk
    • Corn: ₱112.20 million (5,323 MT lost)
    • Livestock and poultry: ₱25.29 million (over 36,000 heads affected)

Other damage include ₱5.24 million in cassava losses, ₱40.63 million in irrigation systems ruined, and minimal farm machinery and infrastructure losses.

While some 68 percent of the ruined farmland still has recovery potential, 31 percent is considered irrecoverable. Damage assessments span across 16 regions, including Central Luzon, Ilocos, Bicol, and Mindanao.

The DA said these figures are still subject to validation, but assistance efforts are already underway. Available aid includes:

    • ₱653 million worth of agri-inputs
    • 51,418 bags of rice from the NFA
    • ₱400 million in survival loans (zero-interest, 3-year term)
    • ₱478 million in crop insurance payouts

The DA is also monitoring commodity prices and enforcing price ceilings in areas under a state of calamity, as mandated by the Price Act.
