Mobile energy systems boost AFP’s emergency operations

The Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with USAID-Energy Secure Philippines and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, officially handed over three mobile energy systems (MES) to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to enhance energy access during critical operations and emergencies.

Each MES unit—housed in a 20-foot trailer—is equipped with 9.18 kWp solar panels, a 60 kVA hybrid inverter, and 102.4 kWh of battery storage, enabling off-grid power generation for mission-critical sites such as command centers, hospitals, and disaster zones.

The handover, held at Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, also included training for AFP personnel on MES operations and maintenance, ensuring rapid deployment and sustainable use in high-risk or remote areas.

Energy undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella described the MES as a “force multiplier” for frontline operations and a key component of the government’s strategy for energy resiliency.

The MES units have already been tested in typhoon-hit Cagayan and remote Palawan, demonstrating their value in delivering immediate, low-maintenance energy. Compared to conventional diesel generators, MES units are more cost-efficient, with prices ranging from P2.99 million to P5.25 million.

This turnover follows USAID’s April 2024 donation of eight MES units to the DOE for nationwide distribution, reinforcing inter-agency collaboration for energy security and disaster response.
