Construction of expanded Siargao airport terminal to begin Friday

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Tuesday that construction of the expanded passenger terminal building (PTB) at Siargao Airport will begin this Friday, as part of efforts to enhance passenger experience and improve comfort and safety for both local and international tourists visiting the island.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the upgraded terminal is expected to ease congestion and accommodate the growing number of visitors to one of the country’s top tourist destinations.

“Our domestic and foreign tourists are suffering, so the President has directed us to improve the experience of travelers in Siargao,” Dizon said. “This is a very important tourist destination.”

The expansion forms part of the bundled unsolicited proposal submitted by the JG Summit and Filinvest Groups under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme, which also covers the modernization of the Davao and Bicol airports.

Once completed, the modernized terminal will significantly increase capacity — from the current 200 passengers to at least 750 passengers daily — tripling the airport’s existing throughput and alleviating overcrowding.
