GCash adds responsible gambling safeguard to platform, backing regulatory push

GCash, the mobile wallet service under Globe Telecom, is rolling out new platform features to bolster responsible online gaming, reinforcing its commitment to user safety and regulatory compliance.

In response to mounting pressure from lawmakers to curb illegal gambling links to digital wallets, and in alignment with upcoming consumer protection measures from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), GCash announced several enhancements aimed at curbing risky gaming behavior.

“We are very supportive, and we do promote responsible gaming,” said Juan Carlo C. Puno, Globe’s Chief Financial Officer, during a virtual briefing. He highlighted that GCash already blocks users under 21 from accessing licensed gaming merchants, consistent with Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) regulations.

    Key changes include:

    • Increased access friction: Navigating to gaming merchants will now require five clicks, up from three, to introduce deliberate barriers.
    • Self-exclusion tools: Users can set their own top-up limits or opt to block themselves from gaming entirely, temporarily or permanently.
    • Interface separation: Licensed gaming services will be moved to a distinct, non-GCash branded section within the app.
    • Proactive reminders: Informational prompts and responsible gaming notices will appear when users enter GLife or access gaming content.

These updates are not only a response to regulatory pressure but also position GCash as a leader in promoting digital financial responsibility, further solidifying its standing in the fintech and telecom sectors.

GCash is part of Mynt, a joint venture of Globe Telecom, Ayala Corporation, and Ant Financial.
