Calbayog Water, a Manila Water non-East Zone operating unit under Manila Water Philippine Ventures (MWPV), has officially launched its first Septage Treatment Facility (SpTP) in Barangay Dinagan, Calbayog City, Samar—marking a significant milestone in the city’s sanitation and environmental protection efforts.
The inauguration was led by MWPV COO Melvin John Tan and regional operations group director for VisMin Roberto Vasquez, with Calbayog City mayor Reymund Uy in attendance. Mayor Uy lauded the project, calling it “a major leap in improving the quality of life” for residents.
The SpTP, which initially processes 10 cubic meters per day (CMD) with scalable capacity to 20 CMD, is the first facility in the city to serve residential customers. Once fully operational, it will support up to 15,000 households on a five-year desludging cycle and operate 240 days annually.
The plant features the i-TECH Packaged Sewer Treatment Plant using membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology, designed to meet stringent DENR effluent standards by effectively removing contaminants such as nitrates and phosphates.
Strategically aligned with the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004, the facility aims to reduce waterborne diseases, prevent groundwater contamination, and elevate public health standards in Calbayog. It also highlights strong public-private collaboration and forms part of Calbayog Water’s long-term sustainability and service expansion agenda.
“This marks not only the completion of a project but the beginning of a healthier, more sustainable future for Calbayog,” said Tan.
The event concluded with a guided tour of the facility, showcasing its design and advanced operational features.
