The Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the 99-megawatt Tantangan Solar Project in South Cotabato, a major step toward boosting the country’s renewable energy capacity.
Jointly developed by Apolaki Seven Inc. and German firm ib vogt GmbH, the solar facility is expected to supply clean, reliable power to over 82,000 homes and cut carbon emissions by approximately 66,000 metric tons annually.
DOE Undersecretary Mylene Capongcol said the project supports the government’s goal of raising the renewable energy share in the power mix to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.
The project’s initial 40 MW phase, awarded under the Green Energy Auction Program 2, is slated for completion by the end of 2026.
As of May 2025, the installed on-grid solar capacity stands at 3,100 MW, making up 10 percent of the country’s 30,967 MW power output.
