ERC OKs Alternergy’s 500kV integration plan

Alternergy Holdings Corp. said the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved the application of Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp. (ATWC) to integrate its 128-megaWatt Tanay Rizal Wind Power Project into the Luzon transmission backbone via a 500-kiloVolt connection.

This is second such approval in August, following a similar decision for Alternergy’s Alabat Wind Power Project. Both projects are part of Alternergy’s push to reach 500 MW renewable capacity by 2026.

The ERC’s decision allows ATWC to build and own a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility, including two double-circuit 500 kV lines and a 500 kV switchyard with a 150 MVA transformer. The project is expected to cost P2.8 billion.

A unique two-stage interconnection was also approved. Initially, ATWC will connect via a bus-in scheme to the existing San Jose-Tayabas 500 kV backbone. This interim setup will be replaced by a permanent link through the forthcoming Baras 500 kV Substation, once completed by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

“This innovative interconnection enables our Tanay project to meet its GEA 2 commitments,” said ATWC president Gerry P. Magbanua. He thanked the ERC and NGCP for their support and praised the agencies’ collaboration in enabling timely green power delivery.

ERC Chairman Francis Saturnino Juan was acknowledged for enabling swift back-to-back approvals, a sign of continued momentum in the country’s clean energy transition.
