Globe, Google complete successful trial of wireless optical tech

Globe Telecom Inc., together with its subsidiary Fiber Infrastructure and Network Services Inc. (FINSI), has successfully completed a landmark field trial of Google’s TAARA Free Space Optics (FSO) technology, achieving a 10Gbps wireless optical connection over 11 kilometers.

The pilot, conducted across Laguna Lake, demonstrated the potential of laser-based wireless communication as a high-capacity alternative to traditional fiber or microwave links, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

The trial used Google’s TAARA FSO system to transmit data via tightly focused beams of light. The setup underwent rigorous industry-standard testing, including Enhanced RFC2544 and a 24-hour Bit Error Rate Test (BERT), meeting Globe’s technical benchmarks for performance.

Gerhard Tan, Globe senior director and head of technology strategy and innovations, hailed the trial as a “significant leap” in delivering cost-effective and rapidly deployable transport solutions. He emphasized the technology’s promise in connecting remote and island communities.

FINSI general manager Xerxes Jonash Sta. Ana echoed the commitment to supporting innovative solutions, saying the project showcases the team’s role in enabling digital inclusion through advanced technologies.

The success of the trial positions FSO as a viable and scalable backhaul solution in the Philippines, particularly where fiber deployment is impractical or expensive.
