MRT-3 adds longer Dalian Train to ease rush hour crowds

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Tuesday the deployment of a four-car Dalian train on the MRT-3 line for the first time, following the successful safety checks of another train car.

The move, in line with President Marcos’ directive to improve passenger experience, is expected to boost train capacity by 500 passengers per set and reduce queues during rush hours. The train will operate from 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said six more Dalian cars are slated for deployment before the year ends, with 42 additional units targeted for next year. Dizon has also urged MRT-3’s maintenance provider, Sumitomo Corp., to accelerate testing of idle Dalian light rail vehicles (LRVs).

To support these efforts, the DOTr extended Sumitomo’s contract for MRT-3 rehabilitation and maintenance until July 2025. The ₱7.38-billion extension, signed in May 2023, also covers line extension works, signal system upgrades for the common station, and expansion of pocket tracks to accommodate longer trains.
