Berde Renewables Inc., a local renewable energy firm backed by global infrastructure investor I Squared Capital, has signed an 8.4-megawatt (MW) solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with KCC Malls and Biotech Farms, marking a significant step in commercial decarbonization and regional energy resilience.
The agreement will supply clean and cost-efficient solar energy to three KCC Mall branches—General Santos, Marbel, and Zamboanga—as well as Biotech Farms’ agro-industrial facility in South Cotabato. Berde Renewables will fully finance, build, operate, and maintain the solar installations.
Expected to generate around 13 million kWh of clean energy annually, the project could deliver an estimated ₱5.8 million in monthly energy savings and offset 9,600 tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
KCC Malls CEO Arvin Chan highlighted the deal as a strategic move to integrate sustainability into retail operations:
“By integrating clean energy into our operations, we are elevating our standards in retail sustainability while ensuring that our malls remain resilient and efficient,” he said.
Biotech Farms’ Renewable Energy director Rainnyl Chiang emphasized the project’s role in advancing their circular economy goals:
“This initiative not only reduces our environmental footprint but also supports the broader goal of building a greener, more resilient Mindanao,” he noted.
The deal underscores growing corporate interest in renewable power procurement in the Philippines. Berde Renewables currently has 45.7 MW of installed solar capacity in the country, with 31 MW under construction and 144 MW in the pipeline. The company is also expanding in Southeast Asia with a 300 MW pipeline in Thailand.
KCC Malls is one of Mindanao’s largest mall operators, while Biotech Farms is a key player in agro-industrial production including livestock, feed milling, and food processing.
