DA dismisses fertilizer fraud claims as “fake news”

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. has firmly rejected claims by the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag) of alleged “ghost deliveries” in the Department of Agriculture’s fertilizer distribution program, labeling the accusations as “fake news” and lacking evidence.

Speaking at the launch of the P20 rice program in Navotas, Tiu Laurel acknowledged documented delays in fertilizer shipments in Regions 1, 2, and 4B but stressed there is no indication of non-existent or fraudulent deliveries. He urged Sinag to present concrete evidence if isuch exists, warning that unsubstantiated allegations undermine public trust and DA operations.

Tiu Laurel noted that three suppliers responsible for the delays face possible penalties, including fines or blacklisting, despite their citing typhoon-related disruptions in fertilizer imports. While termination of contracts was considered, he argued it would have further delayed deliveries and increased costs, as current procurement prices are favorable.

The controversy highlights the policy tension between accountability and continuity in agricultural supply chains. The DA has committed to monitor suppliers closely and enforce penalties as needed to prevent further disruption.
