PH’s longest mountain tunnel completed in Davao

A major milestone was reached in the Davao City Bypass Construction Project as the north and south portals of the second mountain tunnel were successfully connected, marking a significant achievement for engineers and commuters alike.

The breakthrough was celebrated by Embassy of Japan Second Secretary Kinoshita Akito and Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain of the Department of Public Works and Highways. The 2.3-kilometer south tunnel—now officially the longest mountain tunnel in the Philippines—is part of Contract Package I-1, a 10.7-kilometer segment led by the Shimizu-Ulticon-Takenaka joint venture.

This engineering feat signals steady progress toward the completion of the 45.5-kilometer bypass road, which is expected to cut travel time, boost regional connectivity, and stimulate economic activity in Mindanao.

Funded through Japanese official development assistance (ODA), the project underscores Japan’s continued support for Philippine infrastructure under the Build Better More Program. The tunnel’s completion stands as a symbol of strong bilateral cooperation and a shared commitment to quality and sustainability.
