PH launches GASA Chapter to tackle online scams

Globe Telecom has assumed the chairmanship of the newly launched Philippine Chapter of the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), marking a major step in the country’s fight against digital fraud. Tech firm Gogolook and social media giant Meta serve as vice chairs. The appointment was made official at The Globe Tower, where public and private stakeholders—including representatives from banking, payments, tech platforms, and civil society—aligned on a unified strategy to combat online scams.

The initiative is backed by DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, who emphasized the importance of trust in the digital economy. “Combating scams isn’t just a tech issue, it’s a trust issue,” Aguda stated, reinforcing the government’s support for GASA’s multi-sectoral and collaborative model.

Participants of the inaugural meeting committed to forming working groups, creating an advisory council, and drafting plans for a public launch. The alliance aims to share verified scam signals through GASA’s Global Signal Exchange, enabling faster local responses and stronger cross-sector coordination.

Globe, a leader in anti-scam efforts, brings experience in blocking over 484 million scam and spam messages in just the first half of 2025. It has pioneered measures such as eliminating clickable links in SMS and collaborating with regulators to take down fraudulent websites. It also runs educational programs like Digital Thumbprint Program and #SeniorDigizen to support vulnerable groups.

GASA’s research shows that 31 percent of Filipinos who encountered scams lost money, underscoring the urgency of coordinated action. “Filipinos deserve a digital space they can trust,” said lawyer Irish Salandanan-Almeida, Globe chief privacy officer. “Our goal is simple: Prevent fraud, stop scams, and make recovery easier for victims.”

The Philippine Chapter will serve as a model for community-driven defense against scams, focusing on practical protection, fraud intelligence sharing, and rapid response mechanisms—benefiting Filipino consumers and businesses alike.
