Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon has dismissed a district engineer over a P96.5-million anomalous flood control project in Bulacan, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to clean up the agency.
The action came after Dizon discovered that a supposedly completed flood control project in the Angat River, Sipat section — contracted to Wawao Builders — had only begun construction three weeks prior, despite being declared finished.
“Animals did this… and believe me, these animals will be imprisoned,” Dizon said during an inspection, vowing accountability for those involved.
Wawao Builders will face lifetime blacklisting from government projects. Other contractors, including Syms Construction Trading — previously implicated in similar ghost projects — will also be perpetually disqualified.
Suspended assistant district engineer Brice Ericson Hernandez and former construction section head Engr. Jaypee Mendoza of the DPWH Bulacan 1st District Engineering Office will also be terminated.
Dizon emphasized that this is only the beginning of a larger purge of corrupt officials and contractors within the agency.
“The President has been clear — we must not allow this to happen anymore,” Dizon said.
