DigiPlus files for South African gaming license

Online gaming firm DigiPlus Interactive Corp. has officially filed its license application with the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB) in South Africa, signaling its entry into one of the world’s most promising regulated online gaming markets.

In a disclosure Wednesday, DigiPlus said it is seeking three key licenses: a national manufacturer license, a bookmaker license, and a bookmaker premises license. The move marks a significant step in the company’s broader international expansion strategy, following its recent launch in Brazil under its brand GamePlus.

“Filing our online gaming license in South Africa marks another milestone in DigiPlus’ global growth journey,” said DigiPlus chairman Eusebio Tanco, citing the company’s commitment to innovation, responsible gaming, and market localization. He described South Africa as “not just the largest online gaming market in Africa, but a gateway to the continent’s digital future.”

DigiPlus highlighted the WCGRB as the preferred regulatory body for international operators, noting its transparent processes and digital readiness. The company is also in the process of establishing a local legal entity, in compliance with South African rules allowing foreign ownership and directorship under the licensing framework.

The licensing process, which includes intensive probity checks and platform testing, typically takes a minimum of six months. The application also aligns with DigiPlus’ strategic focus on emerging markets, connecting with culturally diverse audiences through localized gaming experiences.

South Africa’s online betting industry is valued at over R28.97 billion (approx. $1.6 billion) as of 2023–2024, and is projected to grow by up to 5 percent annually. Industry growth is being driven by increasing mobile penetration, digital engagement, and demand for live sports betting.

The proposed Remote Gambling Bill is also seen as a positive signal, with potential to legalize additional formats like online casinos, further strengthening South Africa’s position as Africa’s flagship gaming market.

“Together, these developments actualize the company’s vision of becoming a leading digital entertainment provider for the world’s most dynamic emerging markets,” DigiPlus said.
