Power restoration ongoing in storm-hit areas

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) remains on full alert as restoration efforts continue following power interruptions caused by Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name: Bualoi).

As of 12 noon today, around 8,900 customers—mostly in the provinces of Quezon, Laguna, and Cavite—are still without electricity. Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said their personnel are working round-the-clock to bring power back to affected areas.

Meralco also reminded customers, particularly those in flooded areas, to observe safety precautions when dealing with electricity. These include switching off the main power source or circuit breaker and avoiding contact with electrical appliances or outlets when hands are wet. Customers are advised to unplug appliances, turn off permanently connected equipment, and unscrew light bulbs if possible. Mud and debris on electrical equipment should be cleaned using rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes. It is important to ensure that all electrical wires, outlets, and devices are completely dry before use. Appliances and home wiring systems should be inspected by a licensed electrician before being turned back on. Flood-damaged electrical equipment should not be used.

To report power outages and other concerns, customers can reach Meralco through its official Facebook and Twitter pages, text 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211, or call the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
