World’s #1 ophthalmologist partners with Asian Eye

The Asian Eye Institute (AEI) recently welcomed Dr. Ike Ahmed, the world’s most influential ophthalmologist in 2024 (as recognized by The Ophthalmologist magazine), for a high-level research collaboration with Dr. Robert Edward Ang, AEI’s head of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Services and chief of its Research and Training Center.

Dr. Ahmed, internationally acclaimed for pioneering micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), partnered with Dr. Ang to advance “interventional glaucoma” — a movement focused on earlier, safer treatment options to slow glaucoma progression and reduce reliance on long-term eye drop use.

“Dr. Ang and I are working on novel, non-invasive laser techniques targeting the eye’s drainage system to treat glaucoma earlier and more safely,” said Dr. Ahmed. “Asian Eye is a leader in the region, and Dr. Ang has been an essential partner in pushing these innovations forward.”

Asian Eye, under Dr. Ang’s leadership, has long been at the forefront of glaucoma care in the Philippines, conducting clinical trials on next-generation treatments and improving access for Filipino patients. The partnership aims to make advanced glaucoma interventions available locally — interventions that can reduce the long-term economic and personal costs of vision loss.

“We believe glaucoma should be treated earlier,” said Dr. Ang. “The traditional wait-and-see approach with eye drops puts patients at risk. Intervening sooner benefits patients the most.”

Dr. Ahmed praised AEI for its world-class facilities and culture of collaboration. “Innovation in medicine thrives on partnership. Asian Eye is a prime example of excellence in both technology and teamwork,” he added.

This collaboration further cements AEI’s role as a regional hub for ophthalmology innovation and underscores its mission to bring globally recognized eye care solutions to the Philippines.
