Tokyo-Manila defense ties deepen amid maritime security focus

Japan and the Philippines continue to strengthen their maritime defense cooperation, with Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya reaffirming Tokyo’s commitment to supporting Manila’s maritime security capabilities during the Blue Economy Annual Trade & Conference (BEACON EXPO 2025) held at the Mall of Asia.

Speaking at the event hosted by the Maritime League, Ambassador Endo highlighted the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in the context of regional security and the importance of the South China Sea — a critical sea lane for Japanese trade. He emphasized the need for international collaboration under the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) framework, which both nations support.

Ambassador Endo pointed to recent milestones in bilateral defense ties, including joint training exercises between the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), as well as defense equipment transfers. These include coastal surveillance radars and patrol vessels provided to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), aimed at boosting maritime domain awareness and operational capability.

“With our shared values and commitment to peace and stability, Japan will continue to be a reliable partner of the Philippines,” said Endo.

Also present at the event were Philippine Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma Ezpeleta and Department of National Defense (DND) Undersecretary Irineo C. Espino, who represented DND Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr.
