Phone scam surge raise alarm nationwide

Scam calls in the Philippines jumped by 78 percent in the third quarter of 2025, according to the latest Whoscall Scam Report released by Gogolook. The anti-scam platform detected 62,390 scam calls, up from 34,964 in the previous quarter — though still 62 percent lower year-on-year from the same period in 2024.

In contrast, scam text messages continued to decline, with Whoscall recording 37,609 fraudulent SMS, a 42 percent drop from the previous quarter and a dramatic 98 percent decrease year-on-year.

Gogolook Philippines Country Head Mel Migriño attributed the surge in scam calls to scammers exploiting legitimate-sounding telemarketing tactics, particularly from financial institutions. “They mimic real promotional calls, like credit card limit upgrades, making them harder to detect,” she said.

The public’s increasing awareness of SMS-based fraud has pushed scammers to adapt. “Filipinos are now more cautious about clicking links from unknown senders,” Migriño noted, crediting law enforcement raids, advocacy campaigns, and inter-agency cooperation for the SMS scam decline.

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) urged continued vigilance. “We need the public’s help. Reporting scams provides leads for investigations and strengthens our anti-scam efforts,” said CICC Acting Executive Director Usec. Renato Paraiso.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of public-private collaboration in combating digital fraud as scammers shift strategies.

Gogolook, a leading TrustTech company, developed Whoscall to identify and block scam calls and texts globally.
