Meralco expands nuclear engineering scholarship program

Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, has increased the deployment of scholars under its Filipino Scholars and Interns on Nuclear Engineering (FISSION) program. The initiative aims to develop Filipino specialists in nuclear engineering to support the country’s future energy needs.

Currently, seven engineers from Meralco and its power unit, Meralco PowerGen Corp., are pursuing advanced nuclear engineering degrees in top universities worldwide. Two are studying in France, two in Canada, and three are set to start in South Korea next year. This follows an earlier batch studying in the United States and China.

The program includes internships at leading nuclear technology firms to provide practical experience. Meralco Power Academy partners with global institutions to offer access to cutting-edge research and facilities, focusing on innovations like small and micro modular reactors.

FISSION supports Meralco’s Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST), a plan to integrate nuclear power into the Philippines’ energy mix as a sustainable, low-carbon solution.

“Through FISSION, we are investing in the future of energy by equipping Filipino engineers with the specialized knowledge and global experience needed for nuclear power adoption,” said Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco executive vice president and COO. “This reflects our commitment to building a future-ready energy workforce and supporting safe, sustainable nuclear energy for the Philippines.”
