PH leads ASEAN Talks on climate loss and damage

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) hosted the ASEAN Policy Dialogue on Loss and Damage, bringing together Southeast Asian nations to share experiences and strategies in dealing with climate-related impacts.

The Philippines presented its key initiatives, including stronger disaster response systems, improved use of climate data and technology, and enhanced social protection programs. The country is also preparing to host the Board of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FrLD) and is developing a roadmap to access the fund, with support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

A technical working group, led by the DENR and other national agencies, has been formed to guide the country’s approach. It will prioritize projects, track progress, raise awareness, and ensure gender and social inclusion in climate planning.

Meanwhile, PAGASA is upgrading its weather data systems through the Unified Meteorological Information System (PUMIS) and investing in training for better forecasting and disaster preparedness. The DSWD is also modernizing its Listahanan database to improve the delivery of aid and services to vulnerable households.

As one of the most climate-vulnerable countries, the Philippines continues to experience severe impacts from typhoons, floods, and rising sea levels. The dialogue highlighted the country’s leadership in tackling these challenges through innovation, collaboration, and inclusive policies.
