SMC anticipates 10% traffic surge on expressways for Undas break

San Miguel Corporation’s tollway operator, SMC Infrastructure, said it is preparing for a 10 percent rise in vehicle traffic on its expressways during the Undas long weekend.

Starting 12:01 a.m. on October 29, the company will go on full operations under the Department of Transportation’s Oplan Biyaheng Ayos program, which coordinates nationwide travel measures during peak holidays.

To manage the expected surge, quick-response teams with ambulances, tow trucks, and fire engines will be stationed along SLEX, Skyway System, STAR, NAIA Expressway, and TPLEX. A 24-hour command center will oversee traffic flow and emergency coordination.

All road works will be suspended from noon of October 29 until 10 p.m. of November 4 to keep all lanes open for motorists.

SMC Infrastructure also reminded motorists about the new One RFID interoperability program, which allows a single RFID tag to be used on both SMC and Metro Pacific expressways. However, motorists must register their Autosweep accounts for the feature to work. Registration is free and voluntary through www.autosweeprfid.com or at Autosweep service centers.

“We want to make it clear that interoperability has been launched, but activation still requires a simple one-time registration,” the company said.

SMC added that it has coordinated traffic plans with the MMDA, Toll Regulatory Board, LTO, and local governments to ease congestion at major junctions. Emergency help desks will also be available 24/7 at Petron service stations along expressways to assist travelers.
