The Department of Energy (DOE) has reaffirmed the target to integrate nuclear power into the country’s energy mix by 2032, while advancing renewable energy (RE) development through more than 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new capacities under the fourth round of the Green Energy Auction (GEA 4).
On Thursday, the DOE said Energy Secretary Sharon Garin reiterated the nuclear goal during the Ministerial Session of the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) in Paris, emphasizing that the country aims to begin accepting nuclear plant license applications by 2026 under the Philippine Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority.
Garin noted the country’s continuing collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to enhance readiness for nuclear development, including capacity-building workshops on financing and global best practices. Under the Philippine Energy Plan 2023–2050, the government targets at least 1,200 MW of nuclear capacity by 2032, expanding to 4,800 MW by 2050.
Alongside its nuclear push, the DOE said it awarded 123 winning bids under GEA 4, securing a total of 10,195.49 MW of RE capacity to be delivered between 2026 and 2029. Ground-mounted solar led the results with 4,179.09 MW, followed by floating solar (2,284 MW), onshore wind (2,518.29 MW), and integrated RE with storage (1,189.29 MW).
The DOE underscored that both the nuclear and RE initiatives are central to achieving a more secure, diversified, and sustainable power mix, with GEA4 developers required to complete compliance submissions by December 6, 2025.
