MediaTek launches new processor to power next-generation Chromebooks

MediaTek has introduced the new Kompanio 540 processor, built to deliver fast, efficient performance for lightweight Chromebooks used in classrooms and beyond. Designed for students and educators in a digital-first world, the chip promises smooth multitasking, longer battery life, and quiet, fanless operation.

The Kompanio 540 features an octa-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A78 CPUs, a dual-core graphics engine, and support for LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage. This setup allows users to easily switch between browsing, streaming, gaming, and using apps like Tinkercad or Minecraft® Education Edition without lag.

According to John Maletis, VP of ChromeOS at Google, the new processor “brings a balance of power and efficiency” to Chromebooks, giving users “a full day of work and play.”

MediaTek says the Kompanio 540 offers up to 35 percent longer battery life than competing chips, along with high-resolution, power-efficient streaming capabilities. Its fanless design keeps Chromebooks cool, quiet, and portable — ideal for students and professionals on the go.

Chromebooks powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 540 will be available starting January 2026.
