Meralco speeds up power restoration after Super Typhoon Uwan

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said its crews are working around the clock to restore power in areas hit by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong).

As of 10:00 a.m. today, the number of affected customers has dropped to about 197,000, down from over 400,000 at midnight. Around 10,000 customers remain without power in flood-affected areas. Most outages are in Cavite, Bulacan, Quezon, and Metro Manila, with some also in Rizal, Laguna, and Batangas.

Meralco vice president Joe R. Zaldarriaga said the company is prioritizing safety amid continuing strong winds and rains and asked for the public’s patience as restoration work continues.

The company also reminded customers to practice electrical safety, particularly in flooded areas. People are advised to turn off the main power switch or circuit breaker and ensure they stay dry when handling any electrical equipment. Appliances should be unplugged, and light bulbs removed if possible. Mud and dirt should be cleaned from electrical devices, which must be completely dry before use. Flood-damaged appliances should only be turned on after being checked by a licensed electrician.

Zaldarriaga urged the public to keep devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and radios charged, verify information before sharing, and rely only on official updates.

Customers can report outages through Meralco’s Facebook page(facebook.com/meralco), Twitter (@meralco), by texting 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211, or by calling the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
