Maynilad Water Services Inc., the country’s largest water concessionaire by customer base, has expanded its wastewater footprint in southern Metro Manila with the inauguration of the 20-million-liter-per-day (MLD) Tunasan Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) in Muntinlupa City, boosting efforts to protect Laguna de Bay and improve sewerage coverage in the West Zone.
Located along Buendia Street in Barangay Tunasan, the facility draws used water from the Magdaong, Bubogan, and Tunasan Creeks through 1.4 kilometers of sewer pipes, serving some 83,000 customers in the Tunasan catchment area. The facility employs the Modified Ludzack–Ettinger (MLE) biological treatment process, allowing it to meet the stricter effluent standards under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources rules.
“Every wastewater facility we build is more than infrastructure—it is a commitment to public health, a step toward cleaner waterways, and an investment in a future where communities can thrive alongside a healthy environment,” said Maynilad president and chief executive officer Ramoncito S. Fernandez. He noted that expanding sewerage coverage in Muntinlupa strengthens responsible wastewater management across the West Zone and safeguards Laguna de Bay, the country’s largest freshwater lake.
Developed in coordination with the MWSS, DENR, Laguna Lake Development Authority, and the Muntinlupa City Government, the Tunasan WRF discharges treated water into Bubogan Creek. Its opening brings Maynilad’s total wastewater treatment capacity to 790 MLD—supporting the company’s broader program to accelerate sewerage and sanitation services in Metro Manila and aid the rehabilitation of Laguna de Bay.
Maynilad, the country’s largest private water concessionaire by customer base, serves the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, including major cities in Metro Manila and parts of Cavite Province.
