San Miguel’s Ang nixes political “caretaker” rumor

San Miguel Corp. chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang slammed the brakes on fast-spreading rumors that he is being eyed as a political “caretaker” amid intensifying national ructions, calling the chatter pure fiction.

He issued the clarification Thursday, after speculation ricocheted across social media and into markets, flooding his phone with calls and messages.
“I have been getting many messages today, and I also saw the story that has been circulating,” Ang said in a crisp, no-nonsense statement. “Let me put things to rest: I am not entering politics.”

Ang, long regarded as one of the country’s most influential but low-key business leaders, emphasized he has no intention of stepping outside the private sector.

“Most people know me as someone who works quietly in business—building projects, fixing what I can, and supporting government and communities,” he said. “That is where I believe I can contribute the most, and that is where I intend to stay.”

Political tension sparked by corruption investigation had fueled the rumor mill all day, but Ang dismissed the idea that stability could hinge on a single personality.

“Our country is facing many challenges, and it is understandable that people want things resolved quickly,” he said. “But moving forward will never depend on one individual. It will take government, private sector, and the public all moving in the same direction.”

He closed with a steadying message: “My focus is to support that effort. I will be a dependable partner in building our country, nothing more… Let us continue working together for the good of our nation.”
