Agencies rush to improve EDSA for pedestrians, cyclists

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) committed to immediately repair and upgrade pedestrian facilities along EDSA, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to make the major thoroughfare safer and more accessible—especially for persons with disabilities, seniors, and pregnant women.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon conducted a joint inspection on Tuesday, walking the stretch from Ayala in Makati to Roxas Boulevard in Pasay. They were joined by mobility advocacy groups, including Altmobility PH and the Move as One Coalition.

The agencies agreed to roll out quick improvements, such as widening pedestrian lanes, adding shared bike lanes, repairing stops, building more waiting sheds, and clearing obstructions.

Lopez said the current situation makes commuting extremely difficult, noting the President’s order to make EDSA “commuter-centric and pedestrian-friendly.” Dizon echoed this, saying daily travel along EDSA is stressful for commuters and that the President wants long-standing problems finally addressed.
