DOE sees more private-led rooftop solar projects as SM Prime hits 100 MW milestone

The Department of Energy (DOE) expects more private companies to invest in rooftop solar after SM Prime Holdings reached 100 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity across its properties.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said SM Prime’s achievement shows that clean energy can be part of everyday life, adding that the DOE is proud to work with companies helping build a more secure and sustainable energy future.

SM Prime has installed solar systems in 59 properties, using 200,000 panels across 65 hectares of rooftop space. According to the DOE, these systems help cut emissions, lower grid demand, improve comfort in malls, and boost energy resilience for surrounding communities.

Garin said every megawatt of clean energy reduces reliance on imported fuel and protects consumers from unstable energy prices. She urged more companies to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

The DOE said it will continue partnering with the private sector to expand clean energy use and support a more sustainable and inclusive power system. As of end-September 2025, on-grid solar capacity stood at 3,518 MW, or 11 percent of the country’s total power mix of 31,916 MW.
