Honda shines with solar, cuts factory power cost

Honda Parts Manufacturing Corp. (HPMC) has switched on the first phase of its 1.35-megawatt solar rooftop system at its Biñan City plant, a move that is as bright for the environment as it is for the company’s electricity bills.

The project, developed and operated by GreenHeat Corporation under a 10-year solar service agreement, is the opening phase of a multi-stage plan to increase the use of renewable energy in Honda’s local operations.

The numbers are significant. The system is expected to generate approximately 1.55 million kilowatt-hours in its first year, covering about 30 percent of HPMC’s power needs.

For manufacturers in the Philippines, where electricity rates remain one of the highest in Asia, that is a meaningful reduction in operating costs and a practical demonstration that sustainability can also make economic sense.

The environmental benefits are equally notable. The rooftop solar array will offset 773,726 kilograms of carbon dioxide in the first year and 19.3 million kilograms over 25 years. This supports not only Honda’s global carbon-neutrality goals but also shows that factories can reduce their environmental footprint without slowing production.

“At Honda, we believe that manufacturing excellence goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility,” said HPMC president Seiki Futagoishi. “This project allows us to reduce our carbon footprint while keeping production running efficiently.”

GreenHeat director Glenn Tong highlighted the system’s technical features. The installation includes 2,180 high-efficiency 620-watt solar panels, 11 100-kilowatt grid-tie inverters, remote monitoring, and multiple layers of electrical protection. It is designed to operate safely and efficiently under local electrical and structural standards.

For local manufacturers, Honda’s project provides a clear example that renewable energy can be more than a sustainability statement. It can also be a cost-saving and efficiency-boosting solution. In an industrial landscape where every kilowatt counts, the sun is proving to be a reliable partner.

Sustainability is no longer a goal for the future. At HPMC, it is happening now.
