Navotas cold storage raided for unsafe, expired food

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the CIDG–PNP raided two Solid Sea Products cold storage warehouses in Navotas City on Thursday after finding frozen meat and fish allegedly stored in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said earlier inspections showed meat and fish kept together in the same cold rooms, raising risks of dangerous cross-contamination. A Navotas court issued search warrants for the facilities, and DA and CIDG personnel documented all items on site.

Authorities discovered large volumes of frozen products, including yellow croaker, Pangasius fillet, scallops, and various processed meats. Many items—such as pork cuts, chicken breasts, goose, and duck wings—were reportedly expired. The DA said the company has yet to present the required documents for the goods despite repeated requests.

BFAR’s report cited multiple violations of the Food Safety Act, including mixing processed and unprocessed products, foul odors, unpacked items, wooden pallets, poor hygiene practices, and the storage of expired fishery commodities.

Tiu Laurel said the company may also face charges under the Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act if the value of the seized goods exceeds ₱10 million. He stressed that the operation aims to protect consumers, safeguard public and animal health, and stop illegal trade practices that harm local producers.
