First Balfour, Inc., the construction and engineering arm of the Lopez Group, has collected more than six tons of reusable plastic waste for recycling through its partnership with The Plastic Flamingo Philippines (PLAF).
The partnership, which began in 2022, covers plastic waste gathered from First Balfour’s head office in Parañaque City, the FPIP Plaza construction site in Santo Tomas, Batangas, and contributions from employees. Instead of being sent to landfills, the plastic waste was delivered to PLAF’s facility in Muntinlupa for recycling.
PLAF processes the collected plastic into eco-boards and other 100-percent recycled products, such as school chairs, desks, sorting bins, and custom-made furniture. The eco-boards are used in building schools, homes, and shelters, helping communities address plastic pollution and improve disaster resilience.
First Balfour reported collecting 451.3 kilograms of plastic waste in 2022, 2,163.42 kilograms in 2023, 2,037.14 kilograms in 2024, and 1,632.14 kilograms as of October 2025, bringing the total to over 6,000 kilograms.
PLAF welcomed the milestone, crediting the strong participation of First Balfour employees for the sustained collection efforts.
Beyond the partnership, First Balfour has expanded plastic reduction programs across its project sites, including upcycling plastics into site materials, phasing out single-use plastic utensils, and shifting to reusable or eco-friendly alternatives in cafeterias.
First Balfour said the initiative supports its commitment to responsible consumption and production under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with the Lopez Group’s sustainability goals.
A subsidiary of First Philippine Holdings, First Balfour has been involved in major Philippine infrastructure projects since 1969, including water, transport, and expressway developments.
