International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) will invest R$948 million to expand and modernize the Rio Brasil Terminal at the Port of Rio de Janeiro from 2025 to 2029.
The project will raise annual container capacity by 70.5 percent, from 440,000 to 750,000 TEUs, strengthening Rio de Janeiro’s position as a key logistics hub for Brazil’s Southeast and Midwest. Future capacity could reach 1.2 million TEUs.
The investment includes R$414 million for infrastructure works and R$533 million for new equipment, covering yard expansion, terminal reconfiguration, new cranes, upgraded electrical systems, and increased automation.
Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, said the project will improve port competitiveness and support job creation. Cargo movement at the Port of Rio was up 14 percent by late 2025, he added.
The expansion will enable the terminal to handle larger Panamax and post-Panamax vessels. New cranes are expected to arrive from mid-2026, with additional capacity already being offered to customers.
ICTSI said the project will help ease congestion at the Port of Santos and improve logistics efficiency nationwide. Once fully completed, the terminal is expected to operate at around 75 percent capacity by 2029–2030, reducing waiting times and logistics costs.
